Healey Weighs Wealth Tax Options Ahead of UK Budget
UK Finance Minister John Healey is considering implementing wealth-targeted tax measures as part of his first budget, set for October 28. This move could significantly impact the country's wealthiest residents and reshape the fiscal landscape.
The deliberations come as the government faces a familiar squeeze: borrowing costs are climbing, and spending commitments on social care and defense keep growing. Campaigners from Oxfam and Tax Justice UK have been pushing for a 2% annual levy on assets exceeding £10 million, which could generate roughly £24 billion per year.
The implementation of an annual wealth tax is complex, as it requires determining the value of private business assets, art collections, and other non-publicly traded shares. The Institute for Fiscal Studies has pointed out that this valuation problem could undermine the entire framework.
