Hedera Hashgraph is an open-source public ledger that offers fast transaction processing and low energy consumption, but it's not a traditional blockchain.

The platform uses the hashgraph consensus algorithm to order transactions and reach final agreement, which is different from the block-based structure of most blockchain systems.

Leemon Baird invented the hashgraph consensus algorithm while working with Mance Harmon at Swirlds, a company they co-founded. They later created Hedera to make the technology available through a public network built for high throughput and fair transaction ordering.
