High-Performance L1 Blockchains Clash as Developer Pool Remains Constrained
Three high-performance Layer 1 blockchains are competing for a limited pool of developers in what's becoming a zero-sum game. Sui, Monad, and Solana each posted significant ecosystem milestones in Q1 2026, with different architectural choices producing distinct outcomes.
Solana leads in real-world throughput and DeFi liquidity, boasting over $8 billion in total value locked and achieving sustained bursts of up to 65,000 TPS. Meanwhile, Monad's EVM-compatible parallel execution architecture promises 10,000 sustained TPS, targeting Ethereum developers directly by eliminating the need for new programming language knowledge.
Sui, with its object-based Move model, has attracted major gaming and payments partnerships since launching on mainnet in 2023. The network processed a peak of 297 million transactions in a single day during a gaming event in November 2025, enabled by its parallel processing capabilities.
