High-Performance L1 Blockchains Emerge as New Era of Competition in Crypto
The crypto space is witnessing a resurgence in high-performance Layer 1 (L1) blockchains, as Solana, Monad, and Sui vie for dominance. This competition has intensified due to the finite pool of Web3 developers, with every ecosystem gain by one chain being a relative loss for another.
Solana stands out, boasting over $8 billion in total value locked and a proven 65,000 transactions per second (TPS) burst capacity under live conditions. Its Firedancer client has reduced median finality latency by approximately 50% between 2023 and late 2025, establishing 400ms as the new baseline.
Monad, on the other hand, is making a strong technical push with its EVM-compatible parallel execution architecture, promising 10,000 sustained TPS without requiring developers to learn a new programming language. The team has secured significant funding and has set out to complete mainnet hardening while building out ecosystem grants and developer tooling.
Sui's object-based Move model has produced the fastest institutional onboarding story of the three, attracting major gaming and payments partnerships since its 2023 mainnet launch. Its network processed a peak of 297 million transactions in a single day during a gaming event in November 2025, enabled by its object-level parallelism.
