Higher Interest Rates Threaten Metaplanet's Bitcoin Financing Advantage
The Japanese government's announcement of higher interest rates is affecting Metaplanet's Bitcoin financing strategy. The yield on Japan's 30-year government bonds rose to 4.079% after the September 3 auction, increasing the company's financing costs.
Metaplanet uses low-cost borrowing to acquire large amounts of Bitcoin. However, with higher interest rates, the company's ability to maintain its growth in Bitcoin holdings per share is being challenged.
The analysis by Woofun AI shows that if Metaplanet scales up its financing to JPY 10 billion or JPY 100 billion, a 1 percentage point increase in interest rates would raise annual interest expenses by JPY 1 billion. This additional cost equates to an annual loss of purchasing power equivalent to 80 Bitcoins at a Bitcoin price of JPY 12.5 million.
Metaplanet's financial performance for the first half of the year shows that its Bitcoin holdings per 1,000 fully diluted shares increased by 9.6%, reaching 0.0263554 BTC. However, with higher interest rates and increasing debt principal, bond interest rises, and dilution effects from warrant conversions occur.
