HIVE's AI Pivot: GPUs Outperform ASICs by Almost 10x
HIVE Digital Technologies' Executive Chairman Frank Holmes recently shared a revenue model that highlights the potential of redirecting mining hardware toward artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. According to Holmes, HIVE's GPUs generate nearly ten times as much revenue per hour when handling AI compute tasks compared to application-specific mining rigs.
Specifically, an H100 GPU can earn close to $2 per hour, while older-generation GPUs pull in roughly $1.40. In contrast, an ASIC miner clocks between $0.12 and $0.14. This significant revenue gap has led HIVE to reprice its existing hardware assets and allocate capital, power contracts, and data center floor space accordingly.
The company expects the share of revenue coming from AI to leap from roughly 10% to more than 50% this year. This projection reflects a re-evaluation of how mining infrastructure can be repurposed for AI compute tasks. By re-outfitting facilities with NVIDIA processors, HIVE aims to recoup re-outfitting costs and build recurring service contracts.
The trend points toward industrial-grade AI colocation swallowing mining capacity rather than the other way around. The incentives are now so pronounced that they challenge the traditional narrative that miners are long energy and long Bitcoin. HIVE's data suggests they are increasingly long compute, wherever the highest bidder sits.
