HK Retiree Loses HK$10m to Cryptocurrency Scam
A Hong Kong retiree has lost HK$10 million (US$1.3 million) in a cryptocurrency scam.
The victim, a 64-year-old woman who owns multiple properties, was contacted via WhatsApp by a fraudster posing as a prospective tenant in May.
The scammer convinced her to invest large sums of money in cryptocurrencies after claiming they could teach her how to do so.
The woman followed the scammer's instructions and transferred HK$10 million into her digital wallet, only to discover it was empty when she tried to withdraw funds.
