HMRC Issues Record Number of Crypto Tax Warnings
HMRC, the UK's tax authority, has significantly increased its focus on cryptocurrency investors, sending 81,172 crypto tax warnings during the 2025-26 financial year.
This represents a nearly threefold increase from two years ago, when HMRC issued 27,714 crypto tax warnings.
The sharp rise in warnings highlights the growing attention being placed on cryptocurrency taxation in the UK as authorities gain access to more information about digital asset transactions and seek to ensure taxpayers meet their reporting obligations.
HMRC has warned that profits generated from cryptocurrency transactions can create tax obligations depending on the circumstances, including activity involving the sale, exchange or disposal of digital assets.
