HMRC Unleashes Wave of Crypto Tax Letters Amid Growing Scrutiny
HMRC's scrutiny of cryptocurrency investors has intensified, with the UK tax agency sending 81,000 warning letters in the past year. This marks a 25% increase from the previous year's total of approximately 65,000 letters.
The letters, also known as nudge letters, give recipients an opportunity to disclose unpaid taxes before HMRC opens a formal investigation.
UHY Hacker Young Partner Neela Chauhan attributes some noncompliance to investors misunderstanding complex rules or assuming the agency cannot see their transactions. 'There is the expectation amongst tax authorities that cryptocurrency investment is rife with tax evasion,' Chauhan stated.
The UK's cryptocurrency tax framework distinguishes personal investment gains from activity taxed as income, and many investors are unaware that exchanging one digital asset for another can create tax obligations. Spending cryptocurrency on goods or services, giving tokens to others, and engaging in activities like lending or staking may also result in taxable amounts.
Changes scheduled for April 2027 will simplify certain decentralized finance transactions without eliminating tax on their economic gains. The revised treatment of crypto lending and liquidity pools is expected to affect about 700,000 individuals.
