Hong Kong Romance Scam Nets $9 Million in One Week

A romance scam in Hong Kong has netted $9 million for scammers in just one week.

The victim, an insurance agent, was convinced to invest in a fraudulent crypto application by her fake online boyfriend, who stole $3.3 million from her.

This is not an isolated case; 25 similar romance-linked fraud cases were reported between July 24 and July 30, with scammers connecting with victims through dating or messaging apps and convincing them to invest in crypto schemes that promised high returns.

The scams work by directing victims to a site that appears to be a legitimate trading application, displaying fake profits to encourage further investments. However, when victims try to withdraw their funds, they realize they have been scammed.
