Hong Kong Scammers Use Romance to Dupe Victims Out of $9 Million
Hong Kong police have reported a surge in romance-linked fraud cases, with 25 instances recorded between July 24 and July 30. The total losses from these scams amount to around $9 million.
The most notable case involved an insurance agent who lost $3.3 million after being convinced by a fake online boyfriend to invest in a fraudulent crypto application. This approach mimics legitimate trading platforms, showcasing rising profits on screen to entice further investments.
Scam operators typically initiate contact through dating and messaging apps, developing trust over several weeks or months before introducing the idea of cryptocurrency investing. They then direct victims to a website resembling a genuine trading platform, which displays false profits to encourage additional deposits.
