Hong Kong Woman Loses $3.3M to Fake Crypto App Romance Scam
Hong Kong police have exposed a $3.3 million romance scam involving a fake crypto app, highlighting the ongoing threat of online investment scams in the region.
The victim, a 50-something woman with a background in insurance, was introduced to a man by a friend and developed an online relationship with him. The man claimed to be skilled at investing and introduced her to digital assets, luring her to download a cryptocurrency investment platform app.
Over the course of six months, the victim transferred nearly $2.8 million to various accounts controlled by the scammers, who promised high returns on her investments. However, when she requested a withdrawal, she was refused and the scammer suddenly disappeared.
The case is just one example of the many romance scams that have been reported in Hong Kong, with total losses approaching $8.9 million over the past week alone.
