Hormuz Deal Paves Way for Crypto Toll Payments
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments, may soon be reopened after Iranian and Omani negotiators finalized a draft agreement. The deal, which emerged from months of talks between April and July 2026, includes provisions for coordinated passage and toll payments in cryptocurrency or the Chinese yuan.
The proposed arrangement is an interim 60-day framework focused on monitoring tanker traffic through the strait. Oman has long served as a diplomatic intermediary between Tehran and Washington, and US involvement and support are reportedly expected to be formally announced soon.
The draft agreement follows the collapse of a more ambitious effort known as the Islamabad Memorandum, which had included provisions for a 60-day toll-free reopening of the strait. The earlier protocol draft had already floated the concept of advance permits and coordinated passage with optional toll payments in cryptocurrency or yuan.
