Hormuz Diplomacy: UAE Crown Prince Meets Iranian President Amid Tensions
The UAE's Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on September 12 in New Delhi, marking a significant diplomatic contact between the two nations since their relationship deteriorated earlier this year.
The main topic of discussion was the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the open ocean and is crucial for global energy markets. The strait allows roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply to pass through it on any given day, as well as a significant share of liquefied natural gas exports.
The meeting comes after a series of escalating tensions between Iran and the UAE in 2026, which included Iranian missile and drone attacks affecting UAE infrastructure and disrupting maritime operations in the strait. The incident highlighted the importance of maintaining uninterrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with the UAE's Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed publicly stressing its necessity.
