Hormuz Uncertainty Sends WTI Oil Prices Soaring as Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) retreated from their highs during Monday's European trading session, settling around $77.55, a 1.6% gain.
The price hike was largely driven by concerns over the prolonged disruption to global energy supplies, following renewed uncertainty regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has set out six conditions for allowing navigation through the critical waterway, which is responsible for nearly 20% of global energy supply. These demands include reparations from the United States (US) for past conflicts, an end to US threats and sanctions, and the unconditional release of frozen Iranian assets.
Additionally, ongoing tensions between Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi Arabia are impacting the global energy supply chain, further driving up prices.
