Hougan Sees Strengthening Bull Case in Cryptocurrency
Bitwise Asset Management's Chief Investment Officer, Matt Hougan, believes that the case for a bullish outlook in cryptocurrency has strengthened due to five key shifts. He contrasts the current environment with previous market cycles in 2014, 2018, and 2022, when optimism was harder to sustain.
In his latest post on X, Hougan noted that regulatory progress, stablecoins scaling, the rise of tokenization, assets with real revenue and buybacks, and a debasement bid are contributing factors. He cited U.S. rulemaking as an example, with the SEC proposing a framework for regulating crypto assets.
The combined value of stablecoins has exceeded $300 billion by mid-2026, providing a clear measurement behind Hougan's structural argument. Tokenization is also moving towards regulated financial infrastructure across several major markets worldwide.
Hougan previously argued that revenue provides a separate valuation argument for crypto assets, with some projects generating significant revenue and directing it towards buying and burning their own tokens. He used the example of Hyperliquid, which generated over $800 million last year and directed 99% towards buying back HYPE tokens.
