Hougan: Tokenization and AI Could Unleash 10-100x Blockchain Growth
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes investors are underestimating future blockchain transaction activity due to the potential of tokenization and artificial intelligence in reshaping financial markets. He argues that moving traditional assets on-chain and introducing AI agents could drive substantially more transactions than current market activity suggests.
Hougan estimates that tokenized stock transaction counts could grow tenfold, with some scenarios even reaching 50x or 100x the current level without significant effort. This growth is attributed to the increased available trading hours from 33 to 168 per week, as well as AI agents making trades on behalf of investors.
Tokenization has the potential to expand its market beyond crypto and into stocks, bonds, real estate, and other assets, with global stock and bond markets valued at $150 trillion and $350 trillion, respectively, compared to roughly $2 trillion for crypto. Hougan highlights Uniswap as an example of a platform that could benefit from this expansion.
He also notes that investors may be underestimating the growth potential of crypto-native companies relative to traditional financial firms entering the sector, citing Tether and Circle's dominance in stablecoin markets and Coinbase's position in U.S. crypto custody.
