Hougan's 'Own Both' Strategy for Navigating $40 Trillion Debt Burden
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is trying to navigate the country's $40 trillion debt burden, and Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan has a simple solution for investors: own both AI stocks and Bitcoin.
Hougan argues that there are only two possible outcomes for the U.S. economy: either productivity growth driven by AI adoption will help reduce the deficit, or the Treasury will have to devalue the debt through high inflation.
If the first scenario plays out, Hougan expects the technology sector to see a surge in profits, with companies like Micron Technology and AMD already showing impressive resilience. However, if GDP growth fails to accelerate, Bitcoin is seen as the main crisis hedge.
Hougan notes that during periods of volatility, the two assets have shown a mutual offsetting effect, with one compensating for losses in the other. He advises investors to own both AI stocks and Bitcoin to be prepared for either scenario.
