HTX Dust Transfers Spark Compliance Conundrum for Kraken

Nearly 12,000 unsolicited crypto transfers flooded Kraken-linked addresses over eight days in August, prompting the exchange to freeze affected accounts and sparking a debate on crypto compliance challenges.

The wave of small deposits between August 17-24 was unusually high, with roughly 1,500 unsolicited transfers landing on Kraken's wallets per day. This raised concerns about potential sanctions evasion and overwhelmed automated screening systems.

Kraken temporarily restricted accounts while it investigated the issue, but later restored access to affected customers after completing reviews. The exchange kept the disputed funds segregated due to their reported ties to sanctioned wallets.

The source of the transfers remains disputed, with blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence attributing them to HTX. However, HTX denies any involvement and is investigating possible misattribution or third-party misuse of its wallets.
