Humboldt Residents Resist New Data Center Amid Concerns Over Environmental Impact
A new data center is being built in Humboldt, Tennessee, but its arrival has not been met with enthusiasm from local residents. Protesters gathered outside the Humboldt Mayor and Aldermen's meeting to voice their concerns about the facility, which they claim was built without their knowledge or consent.
The residents are worried about the potential impact of the data center on the environment, specifically the amount of electricity and water it will use, as well as noise pollution and infrastructure costs. 'Our goal is to double-check the independent study that they gave us,' said Retina Gibbs, a Humboldt resident and protestor.
The facility is expected to be a Bitcoin mining operation, which has sparked concerns about its environmental impact. The industrial board member defending the project claimed it would have minimal impact and significant benefits, including generating $8.5 million in annual electric revenue.
