On September 9, Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, launched a meme coin called LAPTOP on the Ethereum layer 2 network Base. The launch was announced by Hunter himself via his X account, where he explained the purpose and design of the token.
LAPTOP is a meme coin tied to the controversy surrounding a laptop reportedly used by Hunter in 2019 at a Delaware repair shop. In 2020, during the presidential election campaign, the New York Post reported on emails obtained from the laptop, which appeared to show Hunter arranging meetings with his father's associates while serving on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.
Hunter has framed LAPTOP as a symbol of redemption and recovery, stating that 'the symbol they used to try to destroy me is now a symbol of my strength.' He added that 'they weaponized the laptop. I turned it into a token.'
