Hybrid Custody Model Emerges for Tokenized Assets

Share

Tokenized asset custody is a system that safeguards blockchain-based claims to real-world assets while matching them to legal ownership records. The process involves more than just storing private keys, as it requires transfer controls, fiduciary duties, investor reporting, sanctions checks, redemption rules, and clear answers to questions about who has the legal right to move the asset.

As a result, custody is moving towards a hybrid model that combines wallet technology for cryptographic control with trustees and trust companies handling fiduciary obligations. Institutional custodians connect both sides to auditors, fund administrators, and regulators.

Custody means safekeeping tokens and maintaining controls that make them legally and operationally usable. In institutional settings, a custodian often does four jobs at once: controlling private keys, executing transfers, maintaining records, and supporting legal custody where regulations require client assets to be held by a qualified custodian or regulated bank.

Wallets used in tokenized asset custody include self-custody wallets, which allow users to control their own private keys but can be unforgiving; single-party custodial wallets, which create concentration risk; and multi-signature wallets, which require multiple signers for asset movement. Institutional custodians now use multi-party computation combined with hardware security modules and policy engines.

Trustees play a crucial role in defining who has a legally protected interest in the asset. They sit between the blockchain record and the legal structure and can perform functions such as holding assets, acting as an independent signer, confirming minting and redemption, and supporting investor protection.
