Hype Unlocks: September 6 Token Release to Be a Fraction of Planned Amount
On September 6, 2026, Hyperliquid's unlock calendar lists a tranche of approximately 9.92 million HYPE tokens for core contributors. At the August 27 price of $81.42, this is nominally about $808 million. However, history suggests that only a fraction of this amount will actually reach the market.
In March 2026, the same 9.92 million HYPE tokens were scheduled to be released, but only 173,217 were claimed, which is 1.75 percent of the planned amount. This gap between schedule and claim has been a consistent pattern in Hyperliquid's unlock events.
The key difference between the September 6 tranche and other unlock events is that it follows a linear vesting schedule, with tokens becoming transferable in equal steps over 24 months. This means that the tranche on September 6 is predictable and recurring, rather than a surprise cliff event.
Another factor to consider is the circulating supply of HYPE tokens. Two sources, Hyperliquid's own info interface and CoinGecko, report different numbers: 298,676,567 and 222,445,714 respectively. The difference between these values is significant, with one-third of the smaller number lying between them.
The Hyper Foundation also engages in buybacks, which removes tokens from circulation. According to Tokenomist, around 14.3 percent of tokens on the HYPE unlock path are bought back, funded by fee income earned as a perpetual DEX.
