Hyperliquid Contract Plunges 20% in One Minute Before Rebounding
The perpetual futures contract for SK Hynix on Hyperliquid experienced a sudden and sharp price drop of 20% in just one minute, plummeting to $900 before rebounding above $1,000 and eventually trading near $1,092. This brief dislocation highlighted the risks associated with decentralized perpetual contracts that track traditional assets during overnight market gaps.
The incident occurred shortly before South Korean trading opened, at a particularly illiquid trading hour, leaving questions about whether the derivatives move anticipated the equity selloff or simply reflected fragile overnight order books.
Thin liquidity magnified pressure from South Korean equities, with SK Hynix shares falling 15% to 1,550,000 won, equivalent to roughly $1,762. The broader Kospi index dropped 11%, while Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor also declined.
