Hyperliquid Dominates Crypto Buybacks, But Sustainability Remains Uncertain
Crypto buybacks have reached $638 million in 2026, a 17% increase from last year's total of $545 million. This growth is largely driven by a few high-revenue-generating protocols that are allocating an increasingly large share of their fee-generated income towards repurchasing tokens.
The model is dominated by Hyperliquid and Pumpfun, which account for nearly 90% of the total spent on buybacks so far this year. Hyperliquid leads with roughly $370 million, while Pumpfun follows near $200 million through August.
The ability to create such buybacks will be dependent upon their continued fee generation. In fact, until more protocols begin to generate enough fees, it is unlikely that there will be widespread adoption and use of token buyback programs by other protocols.
