Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy has expressed concerns about the future of Hyperliquid, a decentralized perpetuals exchange, due to potential regulatory pressures from US authorities. According to Gaevoy, Hyperliquid's aggressive expansion into tokenized real-world assets, commodities, and equity trading may be hindered by the need for know-your-customer (KYC) checks and compliance with traditional market infrastructure.

Gaevoy noted that KYC requirements would erode the permissionless model of Hyperliquid, making it less attractive to traders outside major jurisdictions. He also warned that competing with centralized derivatives exchanges like CME and Nasdaq could push Hyperliquid towards becoming increasingly centralized, compromising its decentralized nature.

The regulatory uncertainty is further complicated by the question of token classification. If the HYPE token is seen as facilitating an unregistered exchange or clearing activity, Hyperliquid may face pressure to delist, pay fines, or be blocked in certain jurisdictions. Gaevoy's comments highlight the challenges faced by decentralized exchanges trying to navigate complex regulatory landscapes.
