Hyperliquid Surges on Trump Mention, but Deal with Coinbase is Key Driver
Hyperliquid(CRYPTO: HYPE) saw its price surge by 11% on August 19 after President Donald Trump mentioned it by name at a White House crypto summit. The president stated that the chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) was working to create a path for the exchange to operate legally in the U.S., where it currently blocks U.S. users due to regulatory concerns.
However, an event that makes the market enthusiastic about your holdings should be viewed as an opportunity to step back and reassess, rather than a signal to overinvest. Despite Trump's statement, there is no public filing or registration application on file for Hyperliquid at the time of writing.
The real reason to consider buying Hyperliquid now may not be related to the president's comments. On August 26, the exchange began accruing its share of the reserve yield on its holdings of the USDC stablecoin, thanks to a deal it struck with Coinbase Global and Circle Internet Group earlier this year.
Under this agreement, Hyperliquid will harvest around $182 million per year in yield from the Treasury bills backing the value of the stablecoin. Ninety-nine percent of this yield will be spent buying back Hyperliquid's own coin on the open market, effectively delivering a return to holders.
