Hyperliquid's Custom Blockchain Enables Fast, Decentralized Trading
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) built on its own custom layer 1 blockchain, designed specifically for high-performance order book trading. Unlike most DEXs that rent infrastructure from established chains like Ethereum or Solana, Hyperliquid's custom architecture allows it to match the execution speed of centralized exchanges.
The exchange uses a consensus mechanism called HyperBFT, which is Byzantine Fault Tolerant and targets block latency under 1 second. This enables traders to place limit orders at precise prices, cancel them in milliseconds, and have the whole sequence recorded on a public blockchain with no trusted server involved.
Hyperliquid's on-chain order book model requires extremely high throughput from the underlying chain, which is made possible by its purpose-built architecture. The exchange supports over 150 perpetual markets, covering major assets, mid-cap tokens, and some lower-liquidity markets, with leverage available up to 50x on major pairs.
