Hyperliquid's Custom Blockchain Powers High-Speed On-Chain Order Book
Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange (DEX), stands out from its peers by running on a custom-built layer 1 blockchain. This bespoke architecture allows it to achieve high-performance order book execution speeds, rivaling those of centralized exchanges.
The team behind Hyperliquid rejected the conventional approach of renting infrastructure from existing blockchains like Ethereum or Solana. Instead, they designed a platform where every component, including consensus, storage, and execution, is optimized for matching orders at high throughput.
At its core, Hyperliquid is an on-chain order book exchange that matches buy and sell limit orders in price-time priority. This approach eliminates the need for off-chain servers and trusted intermediaries, providing a transparent and decentralized trading experience.
The consensus mechanism powering Hyperliquid is called HyperBFT, a Byzantine Fault Tolerant protocol derived from the Hotstuff family of BFT protocols. HyperBFT has a latency profile that allows blocks to be finalized in under one second, with a median end-to-end latency of roughly 0.2 seconds.
