Hyperliquid's SpaceX Perps Ignite with $1.4B in Volume Amid Rival Exchange Woes
When SpaceX listed on Nasdaq on June 12, its debut was accompanied by a surge in trading activity on Hyperliquid's platform. The exchange's synthetic SpaceX futures contract cleared $1.4 billion in volume, accounting for nearly 30% of all stock-perpetual activity on the network.
In contrast to rival exchanges Bybit, Binance, and Bitget, which canceled their tokenized versions of SpaceX due to a lack of allocation from xStocks, Hyperliquid's contract did not require any actual shares. Instead, it tracked a reference price through funding rates, allowing it to maintain supply and handle the high trading volume.
The episode highlights the growing popularity of synthetic perpetuals on regulated exchanges like Hyperliquid. With $18.8 billion in turnover during the first half of June, stock-linked perpetuals outpaced crude oil and Brent contracts on the same venue. This trend is likely driven by traders rotating from commodities to equities through round-the-clock markets.
Hyperliquid's native token HYPE also saw a 10% increase on listing day, benefiting from trading fees that fed token buybacks.
