Hyperliquid's US Expansion Faces Regulatory and Scalability Hurdles
Wintermute CEO Evgeny Gaevoy has expressed concerns about Hyperliquid's future as it seeks to expand into the US market. He fears that stricter regulations could force Hyperliquid to introduce KYC requirements or restrict users from sanctioned jurisdictions, which would change what makes it different from traditional centralized exchanges.
Gaevoy also questioned whether blockchains can handle the enormous volumes handled by traditional exchanges like CME and Nasdaq. He argued that competing with major financial exchanges could eventually require Hyperliquid to become more centralized, which could be a shift for the platform's original on-chain model.
Hyperliquid is already working towards US access and has engaged with policymakers in Washington. The platform's core perps remain unavailable to Americans, but a regulated US pathway could bring new capital and liquidity into the ecosystem.
