Hyperscale Abandons Bitcoin Mining for AI Computing at Michigan Site
Hyperscale Data Centers has shifted its focus from Bitcoin mining to Artificial Intelligence computing at one of its Michigan sites. The company powered down all remaining Bitcoin rigs at the facility on September 1, marking a significant change in direction for the site.
The move comes after Hyperscale entered into a 20-year services contract with a California-based neocloud customer, which could generate up to $3 billion in revenue if the customer exercises an option to add 32 MW of power. Despite this potential windfall, the company still holds onto about 275 BTC, valued at around $21.2 million.
Hyperscale has chosen to fund its development and equipment needs by selling a portion of its Bitcoin holdings, raising approximately $53 million over the past five weeks. However, investors seem less than enthusiastic about the pivot, with shares hitting an all-time low on Wednesday and extending their year-to-date slide to over 76%.
