IBIT Sells Daily Bitcoin to Pay Sponsor Fee, Triggering Taxable Events
The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ:IBIT) has an operating mechanism that involves selling a portion of its Bitcoin holdings daily to pay itself a 0.25% sponsor fee. This process, as outlined in the trust's prospectus, treats each sale as a taxable event for shareholders.
For a $10,000 position, the annual fund-level expenses amount to roughly $25. Over 20 years, this would translate to about $500 in sponsor fees before any potential growth in Bitcoin's price.
IBIT holds nearly all of its assets as Bitcoin and only maintains a small cash reserve. To cover the daily accruals, the trust sells the necessary amount of Bitcoin. This means that even if investors don't sell their shares, the fund is still realizing tiny gains or losses on their behalf each trading day.
As a grantor trust, IBIT's structure allows the IRS to treat shareholders as direct owners of a proportionate slice of the underlying Bitcoin. The prospectus explicitly states that each delivery or sale of Bitcoins by the Trust for the payment of expenses will be a taxable event to Shareholders.
