Iceland Votes Down EU Talks, Stays Outside MiCA Crypto Rules
Iceland has rejected a proposal to re-enter EU integration talks, which would have led to the nation becoming a member state and bringing it under the MiCA framework for crypto assets.
The referendum held on August 30 saw 52.8% of voters (105,339 votes) support the No option, indicating that rural communities strongly opposed resuming EU talks while urban areas were more in favor.
This decision keeps Iceland outside the MiCA framework umbrella but may change in the future if upcoming changes to EEA states' responsibilities force its hand in crypto regulation.
Ella Nummelin from IBCCS TAX CY noted that, as an EEA member rather than an EU Member State, Iceland is not automatically subject to MiCA. However, it's widely expected to be incorporated into the EEA Agreement in the future, bringing Iceland closer to the broader European crypto regulatory framework.
