IMF Clarifies Source of El Salvador's Growing Bitcoin Reserves
El Salvador's Bitcoin stash has been growing for years, raising eyebrows about how it accumulated more coins despite being under an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to limit public-sector accumulation.
The IMF has now clarified that all Bitcoin added to official holdings since June 2025 came from private donations. According to the IMF, no further buying beyond these documented donations is expected.
El Salvador's official BTC tracker showed 7,764.37 BTC at the time of writing, with a significant increase in November and a daily addition of one BTC ever since.
The country has been discussing its crypto framework as part of its $1.4 billion financing program with the IMF. As a result, El Salvador made changes to make Bitcoin acceptance voluntary for private businesses and limit government involvement in BTC purchases.
