IMF Confirms El Salvador's Bitcoin Holdings Grew Through Private Donations
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has updated its assessment of El Salvador's Bitcoin holdings, confirming that the country's stash grew through private donations rather than public funds. This concession removes a cloud over El Salvador's $1.4 billion Extended Fund Facility program.
The IMF initially argued that El Salvador's reported Bitcoin accumulation was simply internal transfers between government wallets with no net change in holdings. However, they now confirm that every Bitcoin added to the government's holdings since June 27, 2025, came from private donations, not taxpayer money.
El Salvador's total stash sits at approximately 7,764 BTC as of early September 2026. The shift from 'nothing changed' to 'it grew, but through donations' is notable, acknowledging real accumulation while confirming that El Salvador hasn't violated the core condition of its bailout arrangement: no public funds flowing into speculative crypto positions.
