El Salvador's government has clarified that no public funds were used to purchase Bitcoin in recent months, according to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) statement.

The IMF confirmed that private donations were behind the acquisition of BTC by the country, which made Bitcoin a legal tender in 2025.

As part of changes to its Chivo e-wallet and efforts to improve transparency around its BTC holdings, El Salvador has reduced public participation and transferred majority ownership and operational control to a private operator.

The IMF also stated that no additional Bitcoin accumulation beyond the documented donations is expected.
