IMF Confirms Private Donations Fuel El Salvador's Bitcoin Holdings
El Salvador's bitcoin holdings have been a topic of interest for months, and now the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has weighed in. The IMF confirmed that the country did not use public funds to accumulate additional Bitcoin, but instead received private donations.
The disclosure came as part of the fund's review of El Salvador's 40-month Extended Fund Facility, which included a staff-level agreement on the combined second and third reviews. According to the IMF, documentation provided by Salvadoran authorities showed that the additional Bitcoin holdings since the first review came from private donors.
The Bitcoin tracker has climbed to 7,764.37 BTC after a significant increase in November, and President Nayib Bukele has stated that the country's bitcoin purchases will not stop. The government has also expanded its national Bitcoin treasury and continued its one-bitcoin-a-day strategy.
The IMF did not identify the donors or specify how much each contributed. However, it stressed that the documentation was provided by Salvadoran authorities and that no further accumulation beyond those documented donations is expected.
