IMF Confirms Private Donations Fund El Salvador's $628 Million Bitcoin Stash
El Salvador's $628 million Bitcoin stash has been confirmed to come from private donations by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The confirmation follows an IMF assessment of El Salvador's $1.4 billion financing agreement in June 2025, which showed that all cryptocurrency added to the country's reserves since June 27, 2025, was sourced from private philanthropic contributions rather than public funds.
No additional accumulation of Bitcoin beyond these donations is expected, according to IMF staff members familiar with the arrangements. This news comes after scrutiny in November 2025 regarding potential violations of IMF financing conditions and demands for greater transparency regarding the origin of El Salvador's $100 million in Bitcoin obtained that month.
As part of its IMF program, El Salvador pledged in December 2024 to reduce direct government involvement in Bitcoin operations. Under this arrangement, use of Bitcoin by private businesses became optional, tax payments were restricted to US dollars, and the government agreed to limit its participation in digital currency infrastructure.
