IMF Deal Ends Public Funding for El Salvador's Bitcoin Purchases
El Salvador's government has halted public funding for Bitcoin purchases, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The decision marks a shift in the country's approach to sovereign Bitcoin holdings. Since June 27, 2025, all Bitcoin acquired by El Salvador came from private donations.
The IMF expects no further Bitcoin accumulation beyond documented donations. This move is part of an agreement between the IMF and El Salvador on its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement.
El Salvador's economy has been performing strongly, with real GDP growth exceeding expectations in 2025 and projected to reach 4.5% in 2026. The country's government also agreed to steps modernizing its legal, regulatory, and supervisory framework for digital assets.
