IMF Says El Salvador's Bitcoin Reserve Grew from Private Donations
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released its latest review of El Salvador's loan program, and it states that the country's Bitcoin reserve growth over the past year came from private donations, not new government spending.
The IMF reviewed documents supplied by El Salvador and found that the increase in the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve reflected private donations. The Fund also stated that no public resources were used to accumulate the additional 1,540 BTC, which brought the total reserve to more than 7,764 BTC.
This assessment sits uneasily beside the government's continued pro-Bitcoin messaging and claims of daily purchases. El Salvador has maintained its push for Bitcoin adoption despite the IMF's findings.
