IMF Scrutinizes Brazil's Stablecoin Market Amid Rising Cross-Border Crypto Flows
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called for closer oversight of Brazil's stablecoin market, citing its growing links with the country's financial system and increased sensitivity to global shocks.
A recent IMF report found that cross-border crypto flows in Brazil have grown faster than traditional capital movements, with dollar-backed stablecoins accounting for a significant share of digital asset activity.
The report noted that purchases of dollar-backed stablecoins are two to three times more sensitive to external market events, raising concerns over how quickly international volatility could spread through crypto markets.
Brazil's central bank has already introduced measures to regulate crypto asset service providers, but the IMF said several areas still need stronger rules, including customer asset protection and compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CFT) standards.
