IMF Sounds Alarm on Brazil's Booming Crypto Market
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sounded the alarm on Brazil's booming cryptocurrency market, calling for urgent oversight due to significant compliance holes in the regulatory framework.
The IMF's latest Financial System Stability Assessment report found that cross-border crypto flows have been steadily growing since 2017 and now surpass traditional capital volumes. Most of these flows are driven by stablecoins, which have become popular among companies and retail investors due to their efficiency and tax-related advantages.
The report highlights the close links between Brazil's cryptocurrency market and its traditional financial system, with many virtual asset service providers (VASPs) operating in both sectors. However, the IMF notes that Brazil lacks proper protections for customers and asset segregation, as well as full enforcement of travel rule regulations to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing.
The report acknowledges that the Central Bank of Brazil has taken steps to regulate VASPs, but more needs to be done to ensure the stability of the financial system. Regulators are urged to set up advanced reporting protocols with cooperation from national and foreign supervisors to mitigate risks.
