IMF Sounds Alarm on Brazil's Explosive Stablecoin Growth
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised concerns about Brazil's rapidly growing stablecoin market. In a report published on Thursday, the IMF noted that cross-border crypto transactions are expanding faster than traditional capital flows.
The IMF stated that stablecoins have become one of the main drivers of growth in Brazil's crypto market, with demand for them reacting to global shocks two to three times more strongly than portfolio investment or foreign direct investment.
The Central Bank of Brazil has already begun regulating crypto asset service providers, but the IMF believes significant gaps remain in the current framework. These include the protection of customer assets, rules governing stablecoin issuance, and compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing requirements.
