IMF Sounds Alarm on Brazil's Rapidly Growing Stablecoin Market
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a warning about Brazil's stablecoin market, which it says is growing at an alarming rate. The country's stablecoin market has become the largest in Latin America, with dollar-pegged tokens making up nearly 89% of reported crypto volume.
The IMF found that stablecoin purchases are two to three times more sensitive to global market shocks than traditional foreign investment. This means that money can move into or out of Brazil's stablecoin market much faster when global markets turn volatile.
Brazil's central bank has already taken steps to control the growing market, including tightening rules on electronic foreign exchange providers and restricting their use of digital assets for certain international payments and transfers.
