IMF Sounds Alarm on Brazil's Unregulated Crypto Market
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sounded the alarm on Brazil's booming crypto market, calling for urgent oversight to plug compliance holes in an incomplete regulatory framework. The IMF's Financial System Stability Assessment report highlights the massive growth of crypto financial rails in Brazil, with cross-border flows surpassing traditional alternatives since 2017.
The report notes that stablecoins have become a favorite among companies and retail due to their efficiency and tax-related advantages. These flows are largely dependent on international and national investment indexes, such as the S&P 500 and VIX, as well as bitcoin prices. The IMF also acknowledges that the Central Bank of Brazil has taken action to regulate the virtual asset service provider (VASP) industry.
However, the report stresses that Brazil lacks proper protections in several key fields, including legal protections for customers and segregation of assets held in custody. Additionally, international standards such as the full enforcement of travel rule regulations have yet to be implemented. The IMF warns that the Brazilian crypto system is interconnected with the traditional financial system, requiring advanced reporting protocols to mitigate risks.
