IMF Warns Brazil: Tighten Stablecoin Oversight Amid Rapid Growth
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Brazil to strengthen its oversight of stablecoins due to their growing popularity and interconnectedness with the financial system.
Cross-border crypto flows in Brazil have outpaced traditional international capital movements, according to the IMF, which notes that stablecoins react faster to global financial shocks than conventional investments.
Brazil has already tightened payment rules, but regulatory gaps remain unresolved, particularly in areas such as customer protection and reserve management.
The IMF recommends broader regulatory improvements, including stronger customer asset safeguards, clearer stablecoin issuance requirements, and tighter anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing compliance standards.
