IMF Warns Brazil's Central Bank on Crypto Market Oversight
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is urging Brazil's central bank to strengthen oversight of its crypto market. The IMF has expressed concerns about the rapid growth of cross-border crypto transfers in the country, particularly the purchase of dollar-pegged stablecoins.
Crypto transfers have been growing faster than traditional capital flows since 2017, and the IMF notes that stablecoin purchases are two to three times more sensitive to global shocks than portfolio and direct investments. This increased sensitivity poses a risk to financial stability, according to the IMF.
The IMF is calling for stricter government oversight of the crypto market in Brazil, including closing gaps in client asset protection, fiat-pegged token issuance rules, and anti-money laundering measures. Brazil's central bank already regulates crypto service providers, but the IMF believes that further action is needed to ensure the stability of the financial system.
