India Eyes Major Overhaul of FDI Rules Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
The Indian government is considering a significant overhaul of its foreign direct investment (FDI) rules. The proposal aims to triple the threshold for FDI requiring Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approval from $523 million (₹5,000 crore) to $1.57 billion (₹15,000 crore). This would allow ministries to clear larger proposals without CCEA referral and potentially speed up clearances for downstream investments and subsidiaries.
FDI equity inflows rose about 18% to $58.84 billion in FY2025-26, while total FDI reached a record $94.5 billion. However, the government notes that FDI decisions depend on various factors such as growth opportunities, inflation, currency stability, interest rate differentials, and global risk appetite.
A stronger rupee can have a direct impact on the prices of gold and Bitcoin (BTC) in India. A weaker rupee pushes up their INR cost when dollar prices remain the same, while a stronger rupee pushes it down. The interaction between BTC/INR and USD/INR is also considered, so that the BTC/INR return is approximately equal to the BTC/USD return + the USD/INR return.
