India Launches Tokenization Pilot for Corporate Bonds
India's central bank and markets regulator have launched a tokenization pilot for corporate bonds and digital settlement. This initiative aims to modernize India's financial system by leveraging blockchain technology. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) collaborated on this project, which will enable the creation of digital tokens representing ownership in corporate bonds.
According to the pilot, the RBI and SEBI have selected a few banks and market participants to participate in the tokenization process. The goal is to test the feasibility of this new system and its potential benefits for investors and issuers. Tokenization has been touted as a way to increase liquidity, reduce costs, and improve transparency in bond markets.
While some experts welcome the move, others have expressed caution about the potential risks associated with tokenization. The RBI and SEBI will closely monitor the pilot's progress and gather feedback from participants before deciding on its future.
